鈥淭he advancements that I think have been the most impactful in cardiac surgery are mechanical circulatory support and heart transplantation. They offer the gift of a second chance for patients who were previously not able to survive.鈥�

The advancement he鈥檚 hoping to see happen soon.

鈥淥ne of the medical breakthroughs I鈥檇 like to see become a reality in my lifetime has to do with left ventricular assist devices (LVAD), which help pump blood in patients with advanced heart failure. I鈥檇 like to see LVADs be fully implantable and peripherally inserted so we can avoid opening the chest. Those minimally invasive approaches could help people recover more quickly.鈥�

He鈥檚 active in research efforts.

鈥淢y research focuses on continuing to make cardiac surgery safer and more precise. I am involved in trials utilizing innovative mechanical support devices during high-risk cardiac procedures.鈥�

Academic medicine was his calling.

鈥淚 chose to practice at an academic medical center because I love being at the forefront of medicine. I appreciate the commitment to exceptional patient care and medical research. I鈥檓 also passionate about teaching the next generation of surgeons.鈥�
