Dr. Yassine is an endocrinologist with 喵咪社区 and director of the Center for Personalized Brain Health at the Keck School of Medicine of 喵咪社区. He treats patients at Keck Hospital of 喵咪社区 and 喵咪社区 Norris Cancer Hospital.

Here鈥檚 what you won鈥檛 find on his resume.

He always knew he was destined for a career caring for others.

鈥淲hile I was growing up, I had a genuine interest in helping other people in my community. That passion inspired me to become a doctor.鈥

Outside of work, you鈥檒l find him doing something active.

鈥淚 love to go biking in my free time. When the weather permits, I also enjoy swimming in the ocean. I am also a humanitarian. I raise funds for underserved communities.鈥

He鈥檚 been to Europe.

鈥淧ortugal stands out as my favorite travel destination so far.鈥

Acquiring new language skills is a goal.

鈥淚鈥檇 like to learn a new language. My personal bucket list also includes learning to play an instrument and adding new destinations to my passport. I鈥檇 love to visit Latin America and Japan.鈥

He鈥檚 passionate about absorbing as much knowledge as possible.

鈥淚 wouldn鈥檛 trade careers with anyone. Instead, I鈥檇 go back in time and trade places with my younger self. I鈥檇 spend more time learning different things and focus on gaining more skills that you can鈥檛 learn from textbooks alone.鈥

Get him talking about space and exploring the universe.

鈥淢y biggest role model growing up was the astronomer Carl Sagan and his big vision of our species. What Sagan wrote in his book 鈥楶ale Blue Dot鈥 strikes home: 鈥楾o me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we鈥檝e ever known.鈥欌

He enjoys reading.

鈥淢y favorite book is 鈥楾he Prophet鈥 by Kahlil Gibran. It鈥檚 a book of about wisdom and humanity. Gibran guides my priorities, and I often heed his words: 鈥業t is when you give of yourself that you truly give.鈥 His work lent me a new perspective on what gives our life meaning.鈥

Here鈥檚 the best piece of advice he鈥檚 ever received.

鈥淏e kind and stay humble.鈥

He enjoys the combination of patient care and research.

鈥淭alking to patients and having the opportunity to make an impact on their lives is rewarding. Discovering new innovative techniques and treatments, which may ultimately benefit patient care, is also deeply gratifying.鈥

Advancements in treating high cholesterol have been monumental, he says.

鈥淭he most impactful discovery in my field was the discovery of statins, which have helped countless patients live healthier lives by reducing 鈥榖ad cholesterol鈥 in their blood.鈥

Neurological research is a top priority.

鈥淢y research is focused on how factors like genetics, such as carrying the APOE4 gene copy, impact the risk of developing Alzheimer鈥檚 disease. A medical breakthrough I鈥檇 like to see become a reality in my lifetime is the ability to slow the progression of dementia. I am working to discover new treatments to achieve this goal.鈥

He chose Keck Medicine because of the commitment to research.

鈥淚 appreciate the flexibility I have to pursue both clinical care and research efforts here at 喵咪社区. I also value the culture and working with exceptional colleagues who are driven to always provide the best care possible.鈥
