Steven D. Shapiro, MD, oversees all health-related entities for 喵咪社区 which includes clinical care, education and research represented by 喵咪社区鈥檚 academic health system, 喵咪社区, as well as the 喵咪社区 health sciences schools: the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry, the 喵咪社区 Leonard Davis School of Gerontology, the Keck School of Medicine of 喵咪社区, the 喵咪社区 Alfred E. Mann School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, the Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work, the 喵咪社区 Division of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy, and the 喵咪社区 Chan Division of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy.
Shapiro works closely with 喵咪社区鈥檚 senior leadership and is a member of the 喵咪社区 Health System Board, the governing body over Keck Medicine and all clinical care activities at 喵咪社区. His priority is to accelerate health sciences innovation across the university through combining AI-driven technologies with transformative, compassionate patient care.
Shapiro joined 喵咪社区 after spending 15 years at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), where he led UPMC鈥檚 health services division that encompasses 40 hospitals and over 7,000 employed and affiliated physicians. Before UPMC, Shapiro was the Parker B. Francis Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and the chief of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care at Brigham and Women鈥檚 Hospital.
A physician-scientist who remained active clinically and at the lab bench, Shapiro鈥檚 research focused on novel molecular pathways of inflammation, tissue destruction and host defense in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), infectious diseases, vascular disease and lung cancer.
He is the author of more than 230 peer-reviewed manuscripts, chapters and reviews. In addition, he was the editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology and currently serves on several editorial boards.
Shapiro received his bachelor鈥檚 and doctorate degrees from the University of Chicago and his residency and fellowship at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.
